A woman has vowed to boycott her local McDonald’s after staff turned her father away because he didn’t have a smartphone to check-in with.

Vicky Wakelam, 43, had planned to treat 65-year-old dad Colin to a McMuffin meal at the branch on Cheltenham High Street last Wednesday morning to cheer him up after he’d had a hard time.

But she said their bonding time was ruined by restaurant staff who said he couldn’t come in without scanning the track and trace QR code at the entrance.

The mum-of-five said: ‘It was quite embarrassing. We were holding up the queue and my dad was trying use his phone to scan this thing but it’s such an old phone, it wouldn’t work.’

McDonald’s has since apologised for the ordeal, admitting it was a ‘genuine mistake’ on their part. They said employees have been reminded of its policies and procedures.

Vicky told Gloucestershire Live that her dad, who works night shifts stacking shelves at Asda, was ‘quite upset’ by the incident.

She said she pleaded with the manager but was told ‘it is what it is’, adding: ‘Not everybody can afford a smartphone or even use one.’

The cleaner said she nipped back in alone to order herself a sausage and egg McMuffin and her dad a bacon and egg McMuffin to take out.

They managed to find a nearby bench to eat on, but she said the morning was already ruined.

Vicky added: ‘My elderly father had to sit on a bench and eat his breakfast.

‘He enjoyed the meal but for the rest of the morning, it sort of put a dampener on things.

‘I was annoyed. I was really angry because I just wanted to treat my dad.

‘My dad was fed up because he knew I was angry as well and he wanted to enjoy his meal and not have to sit on a bench in the High Street, it was unpleasant.’

A spokesman for McDonald’s said: ‘We are very sorry to hear about this customer’s experience and apologise for any upset this may have caused.

‘This was a genuine mistake made by our restaurant team who incorrectly interpreted our policy and did not offer to check the customer in using the restaurant’s tablet.

‘The restaurant team have been reminded of the policy and procedures we have in place to ensure this is not something that happens again.’
