Jose Mourinho has launched a staunch defence of his treatment of Luke Shaw after the Manchester Unite star criticised his former boss’s man management style.
The 25-year-old struggled to win the faith of the former United boss and was regularly undermined by Mourinho during their two-and-a-half years together at Old Trafford.
Shaw opened up on their tumultuous relationship earlier this week, claiming the majority of his teammates felt he was harshly dealt with by Mourinho, who was recently appointed by Roma following his departure from Spurs.
The former Southampton star, ultimately, has had the last laugh, establishing himself as a key component of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and returning to the international fold after a lengthy absence.
Mourinho, however, is adamant his treatment of Shaw was entirely justified in an attempt to instil a winning mentality in a squad that had lost its way under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
He told talkSPORT: ‘I found a boy.
‘I found a boy after an incredible injury that put his career at risk. A boy with some fears and scars from that awful night.
‘Then to work with me in a club where I was trying to improve mentalities and make ambitions and responsibilities to grow up. It was not easy for him.
‘I push players to the limit and sometimes players aren’t ready to follow me in that mentality.
‘We had good periods.’
