‘I thought you were finished with Holby?’ Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry) asked the new Director of Improvement near the start of tonight’s episode. We thought Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel) was finished with Holby too – but it seems she couldn’t resist the chance to revisit her old stomping ground, this time with a remit to turn the place around after its recent failed inspection.
She brought two people with her. Eli Ebrahimi (Davood Ghadami) is a world class heart surgeon – an ‘A-lister’ according to Max (Jo Martin) – and Jac has brought him in to restore Darwin to its place as a centre of excellence. He made it clear that he’s not going to be Jac’s pussycat, though, telling her he wanted her to not interfere in his work. ‘The revolution stops here’ he warned her. He’s already recruited Chloe Godard (Amy Lennox) to his research team and generally made an excellent first impression.
The second new face is Madge Britton (Clare Burt), a nurse practitioner who’s known Jac for years. Her job is to lick AAU into shape – either that or oversee it being closed altogether, because AAU’s future is very much up in the air. Madge is a blunt, no-nonsense type, but she’s protective of her staff. When a patient touched Kylie (Amy Murphy) inappropriately, Madge was quick to stick up for her and take the incident seriously – perhaps a bit too seriously under the circumstances, because after Madge, Kylie and Ange (Dawn Steele) all piled in on the offender he fell over and dislocated his shoulder, which Madge had only fixed moments earlier.
Madge was fairly supportive of Josh (Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge) and Ange’s relationship, which was handy because they’d just had some bad news. Ange has contracted a virus which means the twins she’s expecting might need in utero blood transfusions and may need to be delivered early. Madge suggested Ange should take some time off ‘if there’s an issue.’
Elsewhere, Dominic (David Ames) reacted to Carole (Julia Deakin)’s diagnosis of dementia by putting her through all the tests available, because he’s desperate for a cure. Meanwhile Jeong-Soo (Chan Woo Lim) was more concerned with how Carole would be feeling. It’s very sweet how Dominic and Jeong-Soo are forming a little bond, and Jeong-Soo did a lovely thing for Carole when he went to Pulses and got her scones because Dominic had said she liked them.
Later there was another touching and sad scene between Dominic and his mum, as he finally took the time to sit down and talk to her.
We discovered what happened when Evie Fletcher (Phoebe French) went off with slimeball Rich Peterson (Richard Pepper) after last week’s fundraiser. It seems that Rich got what he paid for, but according to Evie – who seems rather smitten with him – he was ‘proper caring.’ She’s asked Jeni (Debra Stephenson) not to mention it to Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) and obviously Jeni is only too happy to keep the whole thing secret. But how long will Rich continue to be caring, as we’ve already seen he’s got a very nasty streak?
Jeni had plenty to think about with both her careers. As far as her role as Director of Finance at Holby goes, her nose has been put well out of joint by the arrival of Jac, who’s happy to re-allocate funds as she sees fit. Jeni and Hanssen were both concerned about Jac’s plans for AAU and the hospital in general and agreed that sooner or later she’d make a mistake and they could get the better of her. Unfortunately Jac has mastered one of Hanssen’s trademark skills, the silent loom – and she overheard all this. ‘Check you two – the number cruncher and the paper tiger, cooking up a coup,’ she said, amused. ‘Good luck with that.’
Still hard as nails, then – or maybe not. It was an emotional thing for Jac to have to return to the place where she knew and loved Kian Madani, and where he died. Eventually she managed to ask Chloe about his death, and then took herself to the theatre where he died and had a little cry. She’s only human, after all. And isn’t it brilliant to have her back?
